Torso Tower in Basel
A housing building along the Rhine
Next to the Rhine river, the silhouette of the Torso Tower is cut out, in Basel, Switzerland. Which consists of a tower of one hundred houses of forty square meters and a shopping center.
The 90-meter-high tower emerges from the terrain as a glacier-like alpine volume. For this reason, the shopping center has been used to link the tower to the ground and elevate it.
In the standard housing plant we can see that the house can be accessed through its door, or through another door that opens onto the terraces and serves as lighting and ventilation for the stairs, as well as access and parking for bicycles.
Building structure
The pillars on the façade allow the houses to follow the turn of the volume without problems. When they are tilted, they will suffer opposite tractions that cancel out on the different sides of the building.

The area chosen to intervene is a peninsula located on the Rhine river, as can be seen in the location map.
The reason for the Torso Tower in Basel is to inject residential use on the river bank, whose majority use is industrial.
